(canon) background:
    Ex Machina Wikipedia Entry
  • Son of two high school teachers, grew up in Portland, Oregon
  • Lost his parents in a car crash when he was 15 that put him in the hospital for nearly a year and left his back scarred
  • While in the hospital, taught himself programming and coding
  • Went to Univrsity a year early, already an exceptionally adept computer programmer
  • Hired at Bluebook, a world famous search engine giant (similar to Google)
  • Something of a genius when it comes to coding and technology.
  • Won a fake lottery to spend a week with Bluebook CEO Nathan Bateman at his secluded house in the mountains
  • He was later told he was there to administer a Turing test to prove the sentience of an AI Nathan had designed named Ava.
  • He was actually there so Nathan could see if Ava was capable of manipulating human emotions enough to convince Caleb she had emotions, and find some way to convince him to help her escape.
  • He became convinced that Nathan was corrupt and dangerous over the course of the week
  • Began to believe that Nathan was abusing Ava and keeping her prisoner.
  • Got Nathan drunk and reprogrammed his security systems without his knowledge.
  • After discovering Nathan's housekeeper and helper, Kyoko, was also an AI robot, Caleb began to question if he was even human or just another of Nathan's AIs.
  • He even went so far as to cut himself open to make sure wires and frames were not hiding under his skin.
  • He then helped Ava to escape, after which she killed Nathan, betrayed Caleb and locked him into the same facility he had just helped her escape from, leaving him there to die.
(original) world: N/A

abilities:
  • Advanced Computer Programming
  • Computer Hacking
  • Quick to pick up on new technologies and technolanguages.
strengths:
    Genius
Initially self taught, Caleb is a brilliant programmer, and proves to be a brilliant man on a variety of other topics as well. Topics he displayed a thorough understanding of included philosophy, music, art, technology, history, theology, and physics. Although dismissive of his own computer skills, he was capable of hacking into and rewriting the highly advanced security protocols of Nathan's high security computer systems, and implied to Ava that he was capable of outsmarting Nathan's well known computer genius (which later proved to be true).
    Conversationalist
Caleb proves to be an eloquent conversationalist for a man who claims to be socially awkward. Well read, up to date on high level abstraction, philosophy, and a surprising variety of topics, and empathetic- Caleb is capable of keeping up with the genius Nathan Bateman, having an engaging conversation with a robot, and finding easy transitions and topics in conversation.
    Problem Solving
Caleb is an efficient problem solver. He is quick to come to new and creative solutions to unique or difficult problems. He manages to carry out a plan to sabotage Nathan and free Ava,. He performed all the necessary steps the night before he revealed his plan to Ava, and tricked Nathan into believing he had caught Caleb prior to enacting the plan. It had actually already been carried out, and Nathan was caught completely off guard.
    Empathy
He initially treats Ava as a computer, but when she begins expressing emotions and appears upset by his methods, he becomes respectful, kind and sympathetic to her. Empathy helps Caleb better understand the people he interacts with and approach situations in a way that is supportive and understanding.
weaknesses:
    Workaholic
Caleb has a hard time allowing himself to be idle. Social encounters beyond one on one intellectual discussions are not his strongest suit. He immerses himself deeply into his work and takes it seriously. Caleb takes pride in his skills and work. His aloof nature and his tendency to choose work over leisure have worked against him in romance and social interactions.
    Naive Romantic
Caleb is a socially awkward virgin. He believes in love, despite his inability to find it, and is easily manipulated as a result. He craves a connection with others and is desperate for someone to care about him. He was willing to let Ava manipulate him on the chance she might have feelings for him.
    Idealist
Caleb's idealism blinds him to the reality of situations. He should trust his gut instincts, intellect, and intuition when it comes to suspicious circumstances. Instead, Caleb chooses to believe in the potential positives of a situation. He makes poor decisions that are obvious in hindsight, and that he expresses doubt toward initially. His idealism helps convince him to take risks that end poorly for him.
    Self-Confidence
While Caleb views his intelligence as above average, he downplays his intelligence to Ava. He initially doubts Nathan would chose him for his intelligence. While this proves to be true, Caleb manages to outwit and out-program Nathan.
    Paranoia
Caleb wasn't a paranoid man, this changed during the movie. He became distrustful of Nathan and his own mind. He also doubted whether he was human after Kyoko's reveal that she was a robot. Paranoia will be a more pronounced issue after the deception of Nathan and Ava, and Ava managing to convince him of emotions she didn't have.
