History: MovieCaleb lived his life as something of a shut-in tech geek. While his coworkers were fond of him, he spent most of his time alone and often found social situations slightly awkward to be a part of. At work he wore headphones to keep himself immersed, and he was known to the CEO of the company he worked for as an exceptional coder and dedicated worker.
CRAU Game History:- 26 year old coder at Bluebook (An internet-search giant similar to Google)
- Something of a genius when it comes to coding and technology.
- Won a fake lottery to spend a week with Bluebook CEO Nathan Bateman at his secluded house in the mountains
- He was later told he was there to administer a Turing test to prove Ava's sentience.
- He was actually there to see if Ava was capable of manipulating human emotions enough to convince Caleb she had them and convince him to help her escape.
- He becomes convinced that Nathan is corrupt and dangerous
- He begins to believe that Nathan is abusing Ava and keeping her prisoner.
- He gets Nathan drunk and reprograms his security systems.
- After discovering Nathan's housekeeper and helper Kyoko is also an AI robot, Caleb begins to question if he is even human or just another of Nathan's AIs. He even goes so far as to cut himself open to make sure wires and frames aren't lingering under his skin.
- He then helps Ava to escape after which she kills Nathan, betrays Caleb and locks him into the same facility he had just helped her escape from.
Caleb has been described as an aloof genius. Social encounters are not his strongest suit. As somewhat of a workaholic he immerses himself deeply into his work and takes it seriously. He has a lot of pride in what he does. Not his job specifically, but his skills as a programmer. Unfortunately for Caleb he is both a romantic and a virgin. His somewhat aloof nature and his tendency to choose work over leisure time have worked against him as far as women are concerned.
Despite this, Caleb is actually a very good conversationalist and apparently well liked around his work. He displays a touch of modesty when he 'wins' the competition to spend a week with the CEO of the company he works for. Caleb's true love lies in computers and code, but he craves companionship. This becomes increasingly evident in the way he latches on to Ava and even at times Nathan. Without his work to focus on, he finds himself thrown into two very different social situations.
He initially respects and even idolizes Nathan, but as he gets to know the man he sees him as a drunk and a manipulative man willing to bend all the rules to get what he wants and disturbingly abusive in the way he treats and uses both Ava and Kyoko. Caleb isn't directly confrontational beyond a few short and impassioned arguments against Nathan's actions. Instead, he takes a more covert route and goes behind Nathan's back, even going so far as to intentionally get the man drunk out of his mind so Caleb could reprogram the security system and investigate.
When interacting with Nathan in the beginning, and when interacting with Ava and Kyoko, Caleb proves to be both naive and trusting. He interacts with all three of them with a kind and curious attitude. Though he initially treats Ava as a computer, when she begins expressing emotions and appearing to be upset by his methods he changes tune quickly, becoming respectful, kind and sympathetic to her. Caleb's empathy pushes him far enough that he becomes willing to go to far more sinister lengths to help 'save' Ava from Nathan.
Prior to the movie, Caleb wasn't a paranoid man, but after the deception of both Nathan and Ava, as well as how easily Ava managed to convince him of emotions she apparently didn't have, he developed a more pronounced issue. He became distrustful of Nathan and even his own mind. He even began to doubt whether or not he was human himself after Kyoko's reveal that she was a robot all along.
- Entered Eudio City with a severe case of claustrophobia.
- Became friends with a few people, including Cisco Ramon who introduced him to the blurred lines between fiction and reality and became a close friend and movie-watching partner
- Met Armitage Hux and the two both cut their arms to prove neither was an android, they discussed robots and briefly touched on their similarities
- Befriended and began working for Alex Summers in his Record Shop
- Attempted a number of failed dates and cuddlr conversations with multiple women in the city before withdrawing from his attempts
- Talked with Adam Sackler and Elsa a few times and started friendships with both.
- Eventually was sent home for not keeping up his half of the quota.
- Returned months later (days for him) after being given a second chance.
- Renewed his efforts
- Moved in with Hux after returning and picked up his old job at the record shop, as well as taking on a new job at the university and with a local company.
- Met Axel Johnson and began a friendship with him over tech, literature, and other topics
- Developed a deeper friendship with Adam and told him about his near death experience, betrayal, and the drinking problems he developed as a result of it all. Adam became his sponsor.
- Spoke with Ash a few times but held onto a strong distrust of his android twin due to his being an AI.
- Eventually met Orson Krennic and Kylo Ren. Had a few brief interactions with Ren where he tried not to talk about the complicated issue of being roommates with Hux, or Hux's past with the Ren that had been in the city before this one.
- Shared pastries and philosophical discussions with Krennic and began an intellectual friendship with him.
- Consoled Adam Sackler after a girl he was semi-dating left the city with a very impersonal good bye. Later, helped him come to terms with the fact that it was okay to experiment with other genders and figure out whether or not he could be into it, and supported his decisions to try and expand his borders with someone he trusted (not Caleb).
- As a result of this conversation, began to attempt to expand his own horizons as well, eventually getting up the courage to go on two sort of dates with Bodhi Rook and Kieren Walker.
- Failed to keep up with his sobriety due to both work and personal life related stress factors and went to Adam for help and advice on his uncertainties.
- Adopted a cat with Hux that he grew very fond of.
- Began to experiment with learning magic with Axel after his friend gave him a book of spells.
- Discovered that Krennic was the man Adam was not!dating after going to meet Adam at his 'friend's' house and Krennic coming home while he was there. At this point, he was also taking a class with Krennic and had received multiple nsfw photos of Adam's not!boyfriend via late night texts. After smooithing things over, the three began regularly meeting for dinners and Cards Against Humanity.
- After Adam's friend nearly drowned and he was forced to face some unpleasant facts about Krennic, Adam fell hard off the wagon and Caleb was called to help him. He stayed with Adam at the other man's old apartment and attempted to keep him dry while he sobered up and worked through his issues.
- Opened Level Up with Axel a club & business the two had worked hard to create that would be an alcohol free club for people to meet up and hang out in, below their consulting offices.
- Provided his friends with LINKS beads so they could someday visit with him even if they left.
- Offered Jyn a copy of his entire expansive movie and music collection.
- Attempted to keep tabs on both Krennic and Adam, but had to eventually leave for class and to check on Krennic, during which Adam hid alcohol all over the apartment and got drunk again.
- Caleb fought with both men but eventually managed to rid the apartment of alcohol again. At some point Adam snuck out and back to Krennic.
- Adam and Caleb had a massive fight over Caleb telling him he planned to go back to Hux's galaxy and help him fight his wars, in which Adam brought up valid points but the two disagreed and parted still on rough terms.
- Krennic invited Caleb over for pancakes to attempt to apologize for the fight the two of them had over Adam, but the breakfast never happened, as both Krennic and Adam left the city soon after to go to Piraeus, without a goodbye.
- Axel and a number of Caleb's other friends also leave the city, as more and more people are sent home or choose to leave following the announcement of an end to the volunteer program.
- Caleb attempts to keep Level Up running while slowly sinking into depression and decides not to go home, or anywhere else, but begins to realize the city is too quiet and painfully filled with memories to remain in.
- At a loss for what to do with himself, Caleb falls back on alcohol again, and gets miserably drunk before being approached by the Piraeus reps, in what he initially assumes is a drunken dream or hallucination, but eventually sobers up enough to sign his Raft and check himself in to the PMC for a week.
Incentive: At this point, Caleb no longer knows what to do with himself. He's lonely and lost, and he has no desire to go home, but he also doesn't know where else to go or what to do with himself. He would ask for the opportunity to pick where he goes/stays after his incentive is reached, and also that they keep him at the medical center for a week without access to the network or alcohol, to help him stay sober and remove the temptation to go looking for friends who may or may not be in the city, as either answer could make things worse for him.
Threat Level: Medium-Low: Caleb formulated a plan that would have destroyed his former boss's life's work and left him trapped to potentially die in a completely shut down facility. When spurred on by the right motivations he can be dangerous and even ruthless to an extent. However, it takes a lot to push him to this point and is unlikely to come into play in this city. He is too empathetic of people and reluctant to engage in violent confrontations to be much of a threat in general.
Other:
Caleb is bringing his phone, laptop, and external drives (containing his work and expansive collection of music and movies) with him, as well as several LINKS beads from Eudio, a few records, a record player, and the money he made in the city after it's shifted into resources and then shells.

He became distrustful of Nathan and even his own mind. He even began to doubt whether or not he was human himself after Kyoko's reveal that she was a robot all along.
INCENTIVE:If offered an opportunity, Caleb would willingly go along with this for two major reasons. The first being that without an escape he'd be trapped in a secure facility with no food or way out, where he only had dismantled robots and a dead body for company. The second being that Caleb is a virgin who wants nothing more than to form a connection with someone. After being betrayed and possibly implicated in the murder of his former employer, Caleb would be more than willing to leave it all behind for Eudio, even if the escape was only temporary. The only incentive he would need on his return would be to be deposited outside of Nathan's home and lab, preferably near civilization.
FIT:Caleb craves companionship. He's a lonely young man desperate enough for someone to care about him that he was willing to let a robotic AI manipulate him on the chance that she might actually be capable of having feelings for him. He is a virgin, but not for lack of trying, and while he would likely prefer to form emotional connections before physical ones, he has no hang ups in regards to consensual sexual situations. While never explicitly referenced it was also hinted at that he would have been willing to make things work with a robotic woman had she not betrayed him.
CONSENT:Caleb has never broken consent. He expressed discomfort with Nathan's flippancy in regards to even his robots. Even AI units allegedly programmed to have sex as a part of their existence require consent in his opinion. He is not the sort to engage in anything non-consensual with regards to sex. That being said, he is guilty of watching Ava get dressed/undressed on camera. The difference being that Ava knew the cameras were there.

Here.
Job hunting on the networkI'm having a hard time getting a good read on what companies, specifically tech-based ones, can be found in this city. Do resumes work in the classic style here? I can't imagine phone calls to my previous places of employment could get through to them, so I have to admit I'm curious how we're meant to go about this.
ANYTHING ELSE?
I can prove my skills in person or through a phone or computer. That would be a lot more productive than a paper listing companies and employers who don't exist here, at least. But none of this helps me if I can't find the right type of company to apply to. I'm a programmer. I'm good with code and a large variety of computer languages and I'm a fast learner.
I'm not just looking for a quick cash solution. I want to actually do something of use beyond the obvious reason we're here. We all have to have something to do with the rest of our time. Right?

Genius
- Initially self taught, Caleb is a brilliant programmer, and proves to be a brilliant man on a variety of other topics as well. Topics he displayed a thorough understanding of included philosophy, music, art, technology, history, theology, and physics. Although dismissive of his own computer skills, he was capable of hacking into and rewriting the highly advanced security protocols of Nathan's high security computer systems, and implied to Ava that he was capable of outsmarting Nathan's well known computer genius (which later proved to be true).
- Caleb proves to be an eloquent conversationalist for a man who claims to be socially awkward. Well read, up to date on high level abstraction, philosophy, and a surprising variety of topics, and empathetic- Caleb is capable of keeping up with the genius Nathan Bateman, having an engaging conversation with a robot, and finding easy transitions and topics in conversation.
- Caleb is an efficient problem solver. He is quick to come to new and creative solutions to unique or difficult problems. He manages to carry out a plan to sabotage Nathan and free Ava,. He performed all the necessary steps the night before he revealed his plan to Ava, and tricked Nathan into believing he had caught Caleb prior to enacting the plan. It had actually already been carried out, and Nathan was caught completely off guard.
- He initially treats Ava as a computer, but when she begins expressing emotions and appears upset by his methods, he becomes respectful, kind and sympathetic to her. Empathy helps Caleb better understand the people he interacts with and approach situations in a way that is supportive and understanding.
-
Workaholic
- Caleb has a hard time allowing himself to be idle. Social encounters beyond one on one intellectual discussions are not his strongest suit. He immerses himself deeply into his work and takes it seriously. Caleb takes pride in his skills and work. His aloof nature and his tendency to choose work over leisure have worked against him in romance and social interactions.
- Caleb is a socially awkward virgin. He believes in love, despite his inability to find it, and is easily manipulated as a result. He craves a connection with others and is desperate for someone to care about him. He was willing to let Ava manipulate him on the chance she might have feelings for him.
- Caleb's idealism blinds him to the reality of situations. He should trust his gut instincts, intellect, and intuition when it comes to suspicious circumstances. Instead, Caleb chooses to believe in the potential positives of a situation. He makes poor decisions that are obvious in hindsight, and that he expresses doubt toward initially. His idealism helps convince him to take risks that end poorly for him.
- While Caleb views his intelligence as above average, he downplays his intelligence to Ava. He initially doubts Nathan would chose him for his intelligence. While this proves to be true, Caleb manages to outwit and out-program Nathan.
- Caleb wasn't a paranoid man, this changed during the movie. He became distrustful of Nathan and his own mind. He also doubted whether he was human after Kyoko's reveal that she was a robot. Paranoia will be a more pronounced issue after the deception of Nathan and Ava, and Ava managing to convince him of emotions she didn't have.

Jun. 29th, 2006 04:11 pmOnce you know some things, you can't unknow them. It's a burden that can never be given away. People fall so in love with their pain, they can't leave it behind. The same as the stories they tell. We trap ourselves. The world is full of monsters with friendly faces. You were unsure which pain is worse - the shock of what happened or the ache for what never will. Maybe loneliness is an acquired taste, or maybe it's like plunging your hand in ice water - it hurts like hell in the beginning, and then you go numb. How empty is the world. What a powerful word, future. Of all the abstractions we can articulate to ourselves, of all the concepts we have that other animals do not, how extraordinary the ability to consider a time that's never been experienced. I consider how you don't get to choose whom you're attracted to, you only get to wonder about it, retrospectively. Once someone's hurt you, it's harder to relax around them, harder to think of them as safe to love. But it doesn't stop you from wanting them. Sometimes I actually think it makes the wanting worse. I think that god has a sick sense of humor and when I die, I expect to find him laughing. Kiss me in the dark and let the music play. It's a question of lust. It's a question of trust. |
